The Horatio Hornblower Questionnaire: All
About Wellard
by Teka
NAME: Midshipman Henry Wellard
LIVING ARRANGEMENT: Last hammock in the Midshipmans' berth,
the one that
smashes you into the bulkhead whenever we're underway. The worst
is during
a storm... you'll wake black and blue on one side. Of course,
being bruised
on one side is preferable to being bruised all over.
FAVORITE PASTIME: Trying to stay out of the way. I study alot.
I try to
find small out of the way places so nobody can find me, and I
study.
FAVORITE BOOK: Clarke's 'Seamanship' It's nice to know what
I'm supposed to
do or be able to do, even if i'm kept from doing it.
THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD IS:I've always been partial to
swimming. I
like the feel of water free against your skin and the feeling
of weighing
almost nothing.
THE WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD IS: The feeling of letting someone
down when
you didn't know you were doing it.The feeling of cold metal on
skin runs a
very close second.
FAVORITE SMELLS: Fresh air. It's something I don't always get
enough of. I
also have to say I like the smell of a fresh orange too.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK WHEN YOU WAKE IN THE MORNING:It
varies.
Certain days I dread waking up, and on others I wonder what I
will be
called on to do. Mostly, it is a mixture of the two.
BATTLE: SCARY OR EXCITING: Again, I am torn. I would say exiting
if you ar
being led by a capable officer, but when you are the blind being
led by the
blind, battles are nothgin but sheer terror. You are afarid of
everything
when your senior officers misjudge or fail to judge a situation.
FAVORITE FOODS: I have to say that I am partial to my father's
cook's
pastries. Annabelle used to sneak little pieces to me as I played
under the
table she was working on. Those mometns are some of my happiest
meomories
of home.
CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA: I must say chocolate, because I have
had it so
infrequently. The texture is wonderful; it seems to melt in your
mouth.
STORMS, COOL OR SCARY: On land or during watch, I would have
to say storms
excite me, but if I am asleep during them, aboard the Renown I
usually
awake covered in bruises or on the deck, and have to find another
place to
rest that night.
FAVORITE DRINK: Hot cider. Annabelle used to make it for me
when i woudl
come in wet and cold late at night.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT
BE:There is so
much I would change that I don't know where to start. I would
change the
demeanor of the HMS Renown crew but for a few, I would change
my father's
attitude towards me, I would make my mother a noblewoman, and
bring her
back to life.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT
BE: I would try
to keep myself from being so cowardly sometimes, and I would want
to be
able to make my own decisions and have them be the right ones,
not having
to wait to be told what to do
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN LOVE: No. I suppose I loved Anabelle,
but she was a
mother to me.
IS THE GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL: Most of the time I woudl
say it is
half full, but occasionally it is knocked over and broken.
WHAT'S IN YOUR ANXIETY CLOSET: Oh, too much to fathom. I have
concerns over
my future. i have concerns over whether I will even have a future
or not,
if I will live long enough aboard this hellhole of a ship to see
another
day. I fear that I am not cut out for a life in the navy, I fear
my father
and what people will say if they find out about my past. I fear
being seen
as cowardly and ill-motivated, when in fact, I know what to do.
I fear
being paralysed in a moment when i must act. I fear not being
able to make
the right decision, and most of all I fear death.
WHAT'S YOUR LOFTIEST DREAM: I dream of being able to pass the
examination
and becoming a lieutenant and then working up to being a captain
of my very
own ship. I dream of going home and being able to say to my father
that I
didn't need him at all to grow to be a man.
WHAT'S YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE: Dying alone in some unheard of place.
WHAT DO YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOU THAT YOU FEEL THEY DON'T:
I wish
that they would see the potential that I feel I have, and would
help me
live up to that instead of taking pity on me. The most someone
could do for
me was attempt to clear a path through life that I could follow.
WHAT OTHER HH CHARACTER WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ANSWER THIS QUESTIONNAIRE:
Lt. Archie Kenendy. I feel that he sees something inside of me.
