All About Captain Pellew
By Jean
>
>NAME:
Captain Sir Edward Pellew
>LIVING ARRANGEMENT:
A tasteful though austere cabin on board the frigate Indefatigable
>FAVORITE PASTIME:
A good round of Whist with worthy adversaries
>FAVORITE BOOK:
A well-worn volume of Shakespeare's work
>THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD IS:
The way I feel when I watch one of my men--from the most common seaman to
my first Lieutenant--grow in some way; seeing them learn and adapt and
become better men themselves. Knowing that they are the Navy's future,
and in some small way I am contributing to their success.
(However, I do feel compelled to add that the feeling I get when Kitty
smiles at me is also not bad at all!)

>THE WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD IS:
Losing one of those men. I cannot show it, but I am always aware that
every lost man might have had tremendous impact on countless other lives
had they lived. It is a fact of life and I cannot change it, but it
disturbs me still.

Worst still is when I lose not a man but a soul, if you will...a man who
might have become so much more but I could not reach him. Such as
Hunter.
>FAVORITE SMELLS:
The sea air on a clear day
>WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK WHEN YOU WAKE IN THE MORNING:
Of the endless list of duties that are to be performed, and wondering in
what way one of my men might surprise me in how he does them!
>BATTLE: SCARY OR EXCITING:
Exciting? No, exhilarating, perhaps, but not exciting. Then,
afterwards, when one has time to count the costs, it is always fearful in
hindsight
>FAVORITE FOODS:
A fine bit of roast pork...as long as Horatio is not doing the carving.
>CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA:
I do not care for sweet items
>STORMS, COOL OR SCARY:
I do not understand this expression "cool"? A mild rain storm is quite
pleasant, but anybody who has ever survived a full-blown hurricane in a
ship asail knows that it is damned terrifying, and would be either a liar
or a fool to say otherwise. I am partial to a nice snowstorm, however.
>FAVORITE DRINK:
A fine glass of Claret aged just the right amount, or a good Port
>IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE:
I would have all the fools sent to one island and left there to annoy
each other!
>IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE:
I wish I felt more comfortable opening up to my men, but that is a fault
of my profession as much as of myself.
>HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN LOVE:
Yes, twice. I am a very lucky man.
>IS THE GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL:
Now, it is half full. Four years ago I might have thought it half-empty
>WHAT'S IN YOUR ANXIETY CLOSET
That I could never live up to the standard set for me by my own beloved
captain
>WHAT'S YOUR LOFTIEST DREAM:
To see the end of the war and be able to explore the world with my men,
as Captain Cook did before me
>WHAT'S YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE:
That I should lose this ship and my men, and I would be the lone
survivor, bearing that shame for the rest of my life
>WHAT DO YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOU THAT YOU FEEL THEY DON'T:
I have a fairly good sense of humor and enjoy laughing.
>WHAT OTHER HH CHARACTER WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ANSWER THIS
>QUESTIONNAIRE:
I would dearly love to know what Hornblower has on his mind!
